Trees and Shrubs
Don’t let the warm temperatures fool you. A cold snap can drop us below freezing within hours, making new growth on some woody plants vulnerable. Although now is the best time to prune most deciduous trees and shrubs (those that lose their leaves in the winter), hold off on using fertilizer until early spring.
JANUARY TIP OF THE MONTH
Take those bulbs you bought in September out of the refrigerator and plant this month if you haven’t already done so. And if you want to forgo the forced cold spell, next year get daffodils instead of tulips…they are happy to naturalize even if we don’t have sufficient cold.
"Sowing seeds between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. provides a better rate of germination than sowing any other time of day," writes Ed Smith. "That is because the temperature sensitive phase of germination occurs at night when soil temperatures are lower."

Avoiding and treating diseases in your Texas garden:
- Keep the foliage of your plants dry.
- Remove any dead and diseased plants from your garden. Don’t compost them!
- Keep your garden clean by removing garden debris frequently.
- Keep your garden tools clean.
- Use natural products that will help deal with common plant diseases, such as horticultural cornmeal.
