    Using Color In The Garden

    Valentine Gift Ideas:

    • Lavender Oil Scents It's no difficult task to purchase a bottle of lavender oil essence these days but if you truly want to impress your sweetheart this Valentines then try making your own.

    Steps

    • Step One
Harvest lavender flowers one stem at a time by cutting 6 to 8 inches below the bloom cluster, or just above the woody part. This allows enough length to bundle the flowers together for hanging.

    • Step Two
Cut lavender when the first few flowers are fully open.

    • Step Three
Bundle lavender stems together with a rubber band or small gauge wire. Bunch about a dozen together.

    • Step Four
Hang upside down in a cool, dark place to dry. This usually takes about 2 or 3 weeks, depending on humidity.

    • Step Five

Carefully remove the bundles from their hanging rack, trying not to disturb the dried blossoms. They fall off pretty easily.

    • Step Six

Shake bundle into a large plastic bag or container. The lavender flowers should fall off easily.

    • Step Seven

Keep the container covered and in a cool dry place until the flowers are ready to be made into sachets.

    Tips & Warnings

Lavender plants should be pruned once a year after blooming even if the flowers aren't going to be used. Shape lavender plants into a mound. This will allow the plants to keep that nice, round appearance they are famous for.

Pruning is important for healthy flowers the next year. Prune away all dead wood that did not produce blossoms.

Plant lavender in full sun where it can develop all the way around. A plant that is too close to a wall will grow towards the sun and will fall over with too much weight to one side.

Replace old plants when they get too large to manage pruning properly.

    • Take her for a walk down a garden path It's cheap. It's effective. And, it says 'I Love You' more than pound-gaining chocolates. What's more, it will keep her and you in shape.

    FEBRUARY TIP OF THE MONTH

    Don't rush the garden
When we get a couple of nice spring days, we are often tempted to plant things when it is just a little too early for that plant. Our average last frost date in the area is mid-March, so frost-tender plants should not be put out before then. The actual temperature is not the only thing to consider. Cold winds and very wet soil can also hurt plants that really want the drier, sunnier weather. There are still many plants that can be planted now and enjoyed in the next couple of months, such as cool-weather vegetables, cilantro, dill, larkspur and many others. So be patient and the time to plant tomatoes, basil, marigolds, etc. will be here before you know it.

Weed Control In Winter Helps Lawns

Though still winter, February is the time to begin preparing lawns for spring.

Pre-emergent herbicides should be applied to lawns before weed seeds begin to germinate. For herbicides to be effective you need to get that material down soon, before weeds start coming up in mid-March and mid-April.

Pre-emergent weed control can be purchased at nurseries or garden centers inside large hardware stores, he said. Don't confuse the material with post-emergent weed killer, which shouldn't be applied this early in the year.

Pre-emergent is designed to kill the young plant. Before buying any, determine which brand works best with the type of grass in your yard.

Read the labels carefully, some brands can damage certain species of grass.
